It’s time to grow up America. It doesn’t matter who started it, it ends now.

This morning I took my three children out to breakfast so that my beautiful and overworked wife could enjoy a much deserved break from getting awakened at the crack of dawn by three munchkins intent on making the biggest mess possible before her first sip of coffee.

So, the three kids and I went to Denny’s in Jarrell, Texas.

As these things normally go, the kids all got antsy in the 10 minutes between ordering food and actually eating it, and began to bicker. That bickering turned into shoving. Then the shoving turned into an attempted bite on the arm (a serious crime, punishable by up to ten minutes in the corner.)

I stepped in and told them to stop.

One of my sons looked me in the eye and said, “Well, he started it!”

I responded, “It doesn’t matter who started it, it ends right now!”

The kids grew quiet and began coloring.

As I reflected on my response to the kids, I realized that my facebook feed as of late has been filled with statements similar to my own son’s, “Well, he started it!” response.

It’s time to grow up, America.

In this I mean that the White Supremacist Terrorists who started the protest in Virginia over a statue of Robert E. Lee, a statue which I agree must stand, since erasing history only dooms us to repeat mistakes of the past, have filled their social media accounts with references to the Black Lives Matter movement stating over and over that BLM is a terror group and “they want to tear down our monuments so we are just reacting in kind”. Of course, the “Antifa”, BLM, and other groups on the other side cite “decades of oppression by the white man” to justify their violence and threats of violence.

The KKK and other terror groups on the “alt-right” are justifying violence in response to violence. The BLM and other terror groups on the “alt-left” are doing the same. Violence will always bring about more violence. We are seeing this come to fruition before our very eyes in real-time, thanks to social media.

To be clear, there are no innocent parties here.

But perhaps, just perhaps, healing in America can only begin when either our nation adopts a parent-figure who declares that it doesn’t matter who started it, and declares that it ends now, or we simply grow up and start acting like adults.

We can do that, right?

This means that folks of all races, religions, worldviews, and other groups start treating members of all the other groups like they themselves would like to be treated.

Furthermore, we need to stop finding our identity in our “groups”. This nation was founded on the supremacy of the individual, not a shared group identity, but I digress on that point for the time being.

It doesn’t matter who started it.

Jesus said it best in Matthew 7:12 when he said, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

For his part, the President seems to be on the same emotional wavelength as myself. He posted this to his Twitter account last night after being accused of not condemning the KKK terrorist group in stronger terms earlier in the day;

It ends now.

This short editorial/article doesn’t come even close to exposing all the layers of mistrust, distrust, apathy, hate, or emotion that various groups in our nation are going through. I readily admit that, but I will leave you with one more quote.

Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
