We Texans take our Barbecue very seriously. We can tell if you're giving us brisket with a quality smoke ring - if you don't know what that is, then you're surely not Texan. This list is based on taste alone, so some of these barbecue joints are just windows while others are classy restaurants. Whether you agree with the list or not, one thing is clear - the best barbecue anywhere is found in Texas!
10. Johnny's Steaks and Barbecue - Salado
When you're at Johnny's be sure to get their world-famous Eagle's Wings. Also known for their best-in-Texas Chicken Fried Steaks (as awarded by Texas Highways Magazine), their brisket is nothing to shake a fist at. Throw in a little live music, and you've got yourself a perfect Texas meal. All in all, one of the best barbecue experiences in Texas.
9. Stanley's Famous Pit Barbecue - Tyler
Our number 9 pick is one of the top rated restaurants in the state. It's all about the sauce at Stanley's - and they make it themselves every day. Be sure to devour up a pulled pork sandwich while you're there.
8. Meshack's Bar-B-Que - Garland
Ribs that fall off the bone. Need I say more? Meshack's serves its customers from a window. There's limited outdoor seating, so be prepared to eat in your truck. They concentrate all their efforts on putting out the most tender and tasty food imaginable, and their repeat customers keep coming back for some of the best meats in Texas.
7. Peete Mesquite - Marble Falls
If you want some of their world-famous ribs, then you've got to get here early! Prepared daily and available until they're all gone, the ribs are some of the best in Texas! Right off 281, it's worth taking a road trip!
6. La Barbecue - Austin
If there's ever such a thing as gourmet barbecue, this is it! Everything at La Barbecue is done to perfection. Sides are selected carefully to ensure they compliment the meats perfectly. And smoke rings? They've got 'em. Brisket is tender and perfect every time.
5. Killen's Barbecue - Pearland
Known for their huge beef ribs, you'd better get to Killen's early since they only make a limited number of ribs every day and then they start over the next. Low and slow is their motto, and they are good enough to be in the top 5 barbecue places in Texas!
4. The Salt Lick - Austin
Probably the most famous barbecue spot in Texas, The Salt Lick is known for its signature horseshoe-shaped grill. What comes off the grill is some of the world's best. Their brisket is spot on, but be sure to save room for their incredibly moist and tender turkey as well!
3. Ray's BBQ Shack - Houston
The meats at Ray's are superb. However, I go there for the deep fried corn on the cob as well. You read that right. Ray's BBQ Shack in Houston has perfected the art of the deep fryer. Stop on by and get some!
2. Miller's Smokehouse BBQ - Belton
You know you're in a good eatin' place when the folks are concentrating on eating - not talking! There's one word you hear over and over when you're at Miller's and that word is "Yum". From the succulent brisket to the tender chicken, it's all worth writing home to mama about. It's just that good. (Southern Living Magazine rated them as one of the top in the country - and they are particular to Kansas City, so that says an awful lot right there)
1. Franklin Barbecue - Austin
Once again, Franklin Barbecue is the best barbecue in Texas. Their customers are willing to wait in lines lasting as much as 7 hours to get their hands on the 'slap-yo-mama' good eatin' that can only be found at Franklin. If you ever get a chance to eat their delicious brisket, be prepared to spend the day - but it's worth every second.
